September 2016 Academic Research Highlights

Axsun's swept laser products lead the way in not only commercial SS-OCT systems, but also in cutting edge academic research.  Here are some highlights of recent publications relating to a variety of novel OCT and non-OCT approaches, all based in part on Axsun's swept laser platform.

 

OCT Angiography

OCT Angiography (OCTA) to visualize retinal and choroidal vasculature is a burgeoning area of ophthalmic research and patient care in the past few years.  Gorczynska and colleagues at UC-Davis recently published a thorough comparison of several OCTA processing methods using an Axsun laser.

Liu and colleagues in the Huang group at OHSU introduced split-spectrum phase-gradient OCTA and compared several processing methods using both a SD-OCT system and a SS-OCT system based on Axsun's 200kHz swept laser.

Finally, Ginner and colleagues in the Leitgeb group in Vienna published a wide-field swept-source OCTA approach at 400kHz based on spectral splitting, a clever way to tradeoff axial resolution to gain imaging speed.

Polarization-Sensitive OCT in a Needle Probe

A successful integration of imaging needle probe technology from the Sampson group at Western Australia with PS-OCT technology from the Bouma group at Wellman/MGH was published in Nature Scientific Reports.  The team demonstrated impressive three-dimensional birefringence images of excised breast tumors, with a long-term goal to differentiate between healthy, collagen-rich, and cancerous tissue in an intraoperative fashion.

Master-Slave OCT and Coherence Revival

Utilizing the coherence revival properties of external cavity tunable lasers has been an interesting area of research since these lasers arrived on the scene.  Dr. Bradu et al at the University of Kent have invented a clever new approach for achieving long axial range in a simplified fashion with coherence revival.

Scanning Laser Polarimetry

In a departure from using Axsun's swept lasers for Swept-Source OCT, the Le Grand group in Brest, France has demonstrated the potential of a new high-speed laser scanning Mueller microscope concept.

OCT_Edit, an OCT image editing tool created by Dr. Bart Johnson at Axsun Technologies, has been selected as the "Feature of the Week" on the popular OCT News website:

OCT_Edit is a MATLAB-based program consisting of a GUI and signal processing algorithms to iteratively perform dispersion compensation and background subtraction in raw (i.e. pre-FFT) Fourier-Domain OCT data.

Axsun's Dr. Bart Johnson to speak at IEEE Photonics Society, Boston

Dr. Bart Johnson, Systems Engineering Fellow at Axsun Technologies, will be speaking on the topic of Swept Source Lasers at the Boston Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society on Thursday April 7th, 2016 at 6:30pm.

 



Swept Source Lasers

Abstract:  The development of swept source lasers has made high-speed optical coherence tomography (OCT) cost effective at 1060 and 1310 nm wavelengths.  Axsun Technologies manufactures this type of source and has made inroads into ophthalmology and cardiology applications.  The 1060 product, for example, tunes 990-1100 nm at a 100 kHz sweep rate.  This external cavity diode laser is tuned by a MEMS Fabry-Perot filter.  The act of rapidly sweeping the filter induces a mode-locking behavior.  This is because when the pulses deplete the gain medium they are red shifted due to the index rise in the semiconductor optical amplifier associated with the linewidth enhancement factor.  Instead of each wavelength building up anew from spontaneous emission, the pulses are nonlinearly red shifted to track the filter sweep.  A feedback mechanism built into the laser dynamics ensures that the nonlinear shift follows the MEMS filter sweep.  Axsun has created numerical models of this process and used it to design a new generation of low noise swept lasers.  The numerical model predicts mode locking and chaotic pulsation behaviors in laser designs intended for difference applications.  The agreement with experiment is striking.  The talk will focus on this laser physics to show how it makes these various OCT applications possible.

Biography:  Since 2000, Bart Johnson has been employed as an electro-optics engineer at Boston-area startups CoreTek (tunable VCSELs), Azna (chirp managed lasers for telecom) and Axsun Technologies.  His current position is Systems Engineering Fellow at Axsun involved in laser-based NIR spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography.  He is actively working in the area of NIR spectroscopy, chemometrics and applications.  In OCT, he contributes to electronic systems design and testing as well as theoretical modeling of swept laser sources.  He holds a BEE from the University of Minnesota and a PhD from MIT in electrical engineering.

Axsun Technologies announces acquisition and growth capital investment by Anzu Partners

Financial backing to fuel Axsun growth and product development

Billerica, MA (October 12, 2015) - Axsun Technologies announced that it has been successfully divested from Volcano Corporation, a subsidiary of Royal Philips, and acquired by Anzu Partners, an investment firm based in Washington DC. As part of the transaction, Axsun received a significant infusion of growth capital and an affiliate of Anzu Partners purchased the 65,000 square foot building in Billerica, MA that houses Axsun’s operations.

Axsun's experienced management team will remain in place. Jonathan Hartmann, currently VP/GM will lead the newly independent Axsun as CEO. Peter Whitney will continue as Chief Science Officer and VP of Engineering, leading technology and product development. Chris Baldwin will continue to serve as Chief Financial Officer, and Bill Ahern will continue to lead sales and business development. Mr. Hartmann and Dr. Whitney have joined the Axsun Board of Directors.

Axsun Technologies Announces Volume Purchase Order for Swept Laser Engines from Michelson Diagnostics Ltd.

BILLERICA, Massachusetts (February 3, 2014) – Axsun Technologies Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volcano Corporation (NASDAQ: VOLC) and a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced photonic components and subsystems, has received a volume purchase order for Swept Laser OCT Engines from Michelson Diagnostics Ltd. The Axsun Swept Laser OCT Engine will power the new Michelson Diagnostics’ Vivosight Multi-Beam OCT system. The Vivosight Multi-Beam OCT system is the first OCT scanner to receive FDA 510(k) clearance for imaging skin in high definition, revealing subsurface tissue structure at unprecedented detail.

Axsun Technologies Announces Qualification of New Lead-Free Tunable Laser Platform at the 2014 BIOS/Photonics West Exhibition

BILLERICA, Massachusetts (January 30, 2014) – Axsun Technologies Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volcano Corporation (NASDAQ: VOLC) and a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced photonic components and subsystems, has announced the Qualification of their new Lead-Free Tunable Laser packaging platform. Axsun’s new Lead-Free platform provides the same performance and reliability as previous generations and meets the requirements of the Reduction of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) Directive 2011/65/EU (also known as ROHS2). This new directive eliminates exemptions for several product categories, including Medical Devices that were present in the 2002 Directive. Axsun will begin sampling new Lead-Free Engines in May 2014.

Axsun Technologies Announces Qualification of New OMx Platform at the 2013 ECOC Exhibition

BILLERICA, Massachusetts (September 23, 2013) – Axsun Technologies Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volcano Corporation (NASDAQ: VOLC) and a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced photonic components and subsystems, has announced the completion of Telcordia Qualification of their new OMx Optical Monitor platform, which will be introduced at the upcoming 2013 ECOC Exhibition at the ICC London ExCel, September 23-25, 2013. Axsun’s new OMx platform provides the same high spectral resolution and Flex Grid monitoring capability as previous generations, in an innovative uncooled lead-free module that consumes less than half the electrical power of previous designs, and it meets the requirements of ROHS2. This new OMx platform provides true embedded Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) functionality for optical network management and performance monitoring. Axsun Telecom products have logged over one billion device hours in optical networks operating around the world since 2001.
